I highly recommend the Chicago Electric lamp and appliance timer (Harbor Freight, image). It has two outlets, accommodates multiple on, off cycles, accepts 3 prong plugs and has no loose parts. It's only problem is that it's not intuitive. Most timers have on-off switches activated by pins. The Chicago Electric is off by default and turns on only by depressing the black pegs (black ring around the clock perimeter). The number and position of depressed black pegs determines time and duration of on cycles.

Don't forget the red off-on switch on the side of the timer.
