Uninstall Symantec Endpoint Protection
Uninstall Symantec Endpoint Protection
I came into work one morning and my AVG was gone, replaced by Symantec Endpoint Protection. My computer is an old Windows XP with 256K of memory and was slowed to a crawl by the new antivirus.

After a few days I realized this wasn't going to work. I went to the control panel and software unistall. When I clicked uninstall on Symantec it asked for a password! A quick Google suggested ways to inactivate the password. It was a matter of deleting 2 elements from the registry. Unfortunately these elements weren't where I was told they'd be and one name wasn't as advertised.

To inactivate the password log on in safe mode (F8). The two files you need to delete are smcexit (smc_exit in my version) and smcinstdata. Find them by searching in regedit (run). Once they're deleted, restart in normal mode and unistall.
