I arrived at the bus station in Madison after staying a week with relatives in rural Wisconsin. I considered my Connecticut high school education likely a step above local education. I shared a the taxi with another student. I asked in a condescending manner "Where are you from?". The answer - "Southern Rhodesia". It took additional lessons to fully appreciate how provincial I was.
